Getting There

By Car

The track is reached from SH 43 at Strathmore, east of Stratford. A signpost indicates the road to Upper Mangaehu Road, which you should turn down. The track entrance at Kohi Saddle is 20 minutes away.

Public Transport

Access to the track is difficult, as the Kohi Saddle carpark is approximately 60 km from Stratford. Transport operators do however operate a shuttle service out of Stratford.

Our Recommended Route

Options

A sidetrip to Mt Humpries can be completed while undertaking the whole 3-4 day Matemateaonga Tramping Track.

Drive the car to Kohi Saddle carpark. Follow the track accross fence and through manuka, before heading into the bush. The track is easy to follow.

After about an hour you will reach Omaru Hut (sleeps 12 people). Carry on past the hut for about 2 hours until you reach a side track to Mt Humphries. The track is steep at first but eases after a little while. It's about a 200 m climb to the top and takes about an hour or so. In all, you should allow about 5 hours to get to the summit.

Views from the top are fanstastic on a fine day and include Mt Taranaki in the west, the Central Plateau volcanoes in the east and the flat topped Mt Hikurangi to the north.

Return the way you come. If you would like, you can stay overnight at Omaru Hut before a leisurely walk back to the road the next day.
